Past 2023 Events

January 11th - Ask an Angela, our local mortician - Angela Woosley, M.A.
Zoom 7:00-8:30PM CST
If you work with grieving folks and their dead, chances are you have gotten a request or two that came straight out of left field! Maybe you had the answer, or maybe it left you scratching your head. But navigating the rules and practices surrounding care of the dead can make it hard to find out what’s legal and what isn’t. And many funeral home practices are murky, at best.
What’s an end-of-life practitioner to do? Why, Ask a Mortician, of course! In this informal Q&A session, bring your questions, curiosities, and wonderings to local funeral director Angela Woosley. Are you curious about natural burial? Green cremation? Recompose? Home funerals? And when DO you have to be embalmed, anyway? Ask an Angela!
Angela Woosley Bio - Angela Woosley, M.A. (she/they) is a Minnesota-licensed mortician who taught in the UMN Program of Mortuary Science for over ten years before founding Inspired Journeys LLC. She provides celebrant services across the state, invites folks into caring for their dead, and arranges for natural disposition through her funeral home. Angela currently serves on the board of directors for the National Home Funeral Alliance. She lives in St. Paul with her spouse, his vintage car, and her dog and cat.

February 8th - The doula model of care at Providence Place
Zoom 7:00-8:30PM CST
Listen to an engaging and honest discussion about what it’s been like to be a Doula in a long term care facility. This Doula program called Full Circle Care was co-created and piloted by one of our founders Jane Whitlock and MNDC member Nancy Bond. Hear about both the advantages and challenges of working in a system that continues to be stretched. Hear where doulas have limitations and freedom in a highly regulated facility. Through these personal stories feel, see, and hear how they continue to bring presence, peace and care at the end of life. A must listen!

April 12, 2023, 7:00 - 8:30pm - Grief and Loss Adaptation through the Use of Psychedelic Medicine
Speakers: Kristen N. Paradise, LPCC | Sherry Walling, PhD | Michael Sadowsky, LICSW
Psychedelic medicine has the potential to assist persons in moving through their grief, and moving beyond what may be blocking them from processing their losses, and the grief associated with the losses. Psychedelics have the ability to reset your mind, through quieting the Default Mode Network (DMN) in the brain, allowing new neuro pathways to form, assisting the patient to hold onto and solidify new thoughts, actions and behaviors, post treatment. A psychedelic experience can assist persons in breaking down the barriers that may be hindering them from processing their emotions, to help them find a means of healing. When an individual is in the acute grief phase, it is not recommended that psychedelics be used, until the acute phase is over. This time frame is different for all people, and is not limited to any specific frame of time since their loss, but should be determined by the patient and the mental health professional(s).

May 10th, 2023 - Living the Journey through the Journey Guide Project
Speakers: Dr. Greg Kutcher, Kami Norland, and Mary Ann Boe
We learned from Dr. Greg, Kami, and Mary Ann that the Journey Guide Project sees grieving as an active, adaptive, learning process that should be encouraged and supported right from the start of any serious illness––because that is when loss starts.
Supporting the mind/body/spirit and grieving of patients should become a core process.
The Journey Guide Project is about being a part of an ecosystem focused on learning and supporting new roles–especially of patients–as they live the journey. Learn more about upcoming training and potential discounts (using code MNDC) at journeyguideproject.com.
