Upcoming MNDC Events

Currently, our monthly meetings are held virtually by ZOOM until further notice.

Once we get back to meeting in person, we will be gathering at
Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm CST.  The address is 511 Groveland Avenue, Minneapolis. There is plenty of free parking. Every month will feature a local speaker or special interest topic or have a Death Doula case study discussion about end of life doula work.

Monthly meetings are just one of the benefits to membership. However, if you aren't a 'joiner' or just want to check us out before committing to a long-term (year-long) relationship, monthly meetings are $10 to attend. This change is effective as of our January 2020 gathering.

2023 Monthly MNDC ZOOM Events

February 8th -  Doula model of care at Providence Place - Jane Whitlock, Gigi Fourré Schumacher, Nancy Bond & Lynda Christman

In January of 2021,  Jane Whitlock and Nancy Bond set out to create a doula driven end of life program to support residents and families at a skilled nursing facility in S MPLS.  Providence Place had been identified as a place where people were often dying without the involvement  of family.  Changing demographics and societal trends away from traditions keeping elders in family home settings prior to death has increased the phenomenon of dying in institutional settings.  Jane and Nancy as end of life doulas set out to build a pilot program called Full Circle Care,  where nursing as well as other departmental staff are trained around approaches to enhanced end of life care on both philosophical and practical levels. As the Full Circle Care Program has evolved, residents are given the opportunity to be contributing authors to written death plans including best practice considerations for dignity, comfort and spiritual practices at the end of their lives. Doulas work in collaboration with the IDT (interdisciplinary team) as well as several hospice organizations serving the long term care facilities under the ownership of Senior Care Communities, a non-profit owner.

As the program has expanded, Gigi Schumacher and Lynda Christman have joined the staff as paid end of life doulas. Come hear the ups and down of trying to transform the way one institution looks at death from the ground floor.

volunteer coordinator for the volunteer doula program they hope to launch in early 2023.  She will share with us the challenges and joys of this work.

March 8th - Doula Case Study
Join us in discussion and study as we turn to the collective wisdom of the group and share several case studies. In a field where we are still learning and cultivating our practice, many have expressed interest in mentoring. We recognize the value of learning from each other as a necessary component to honing our craft as well as connecting with our community.
